Description: There are prosodic differences that can be noted in the speech of students on the autism spectrum. These include atypical stress patterns, and intonation, as well as an unusual rate of speech and poor loudness control, etc. Although they may not affect the intelligibility of their speech, it does draw attention from other people and are noticeable as odd. The purpose of this deck is to heighten students' self-awareness of these factors by practicing using different rates, pitches, and volumes of speech so that they are eventually able to self-correct their own prosody and intonation depending on the environment that they are in. This deck allows your students to practice and work on prosody and variable intonation using short sentences. Research shows that explicit prosody intervention helped children with autism use more appropriate pitch contours and emotional intonation. Paul et al. (2005)
