Description: Your students will have fun reviewing past simple irregular verbs while learning about Mexican American botanist Ynés Mexía. In this engaging picture reveal game, twenty sentences are presented one by one. The sentences are accompanied by audio recordings to support emergent and struggling readers. Each sentence contains an irregular verb in the past simple form, which students must type correctly to complete a piece of the puzzle. The following verbs and phrasal verbs are included: be born, begin, bring, fall, find, go, grow up, have, know, meet, ride, run, sleep, speak, take, wear, and write. A list of infinitive and past simple forms is given on the first slide to review and clarify verb forms and spellings. The text is a brief biography of Ynés Mexía, who defied society’s limited expectations of women, especially Latina and Chicana women, to become an accomplished botanist. Her story would tie in well with Hispanic Heritage Month, Women's History Month, or International Women's Day. This resource supports the following second and third grade common core standards for English language arts: 2.1.D: Form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs. 3.1.D: Form and use regular and irregular verbs. 3.1.E: Form and use the simple verb tenses. It would also be appropriate for English language learners in upper elementary, middle school, or high school who are learning to use past simple verbs.
