Description: The prosody and intonation of our speech play a very important role in communication along with the words that we use. Said in two different ways, the exact same words, can have two entirely different meanings. Our well-meaning students on the autism spectrum are usually misunderstood  due to the paralinguistic aspect of their speech, even though there is nothing wrong with the linguistic message. For example, if they tell a friend, 'You are smart' in an upward inflection, it may sound sarcastic. We have to remind them things like: - Use a soft tone and a calm voice especially when talking to people you don't know. - Don't make unnecessary pauses while talking . - Your speech should have a natural flow instead of unexpected bumps caused by changes in speed and loudness.  - Don't use a very loud voice since it seems like you're angry and are yelling. - Don't whisper when talking because no one can hear you. - Be careful when you put emphasis on certain words since it can change the meaning entirely. This deck is an attempt to heighten their awareness by practicing identifying the correct prosody and intonation in a given situation. Good Luck!
