Description: Spring is full of interesting sounds! This illustrated poem is a great springboard for discussing kids' experiences outdoors in their neighborhood during springtime. Use it with your students to develop reading fluency, to explore the use of onomatopoeia and rhyme in poetry, or just for fun! Onomatopoeia runs throughout the poem in the grammatical construction, “What’s that + gerund?” Kids will enjoy thinking of things that might make these sounds in their own communities. The following onomatopoeic words are included: buzzing, bouncing, chirping, creaking, fluttering, growling, humming, purring, roaring, scratching, thumping, and whooshing. Children can listen as they read along with this ebook featuring audio. The poem is illustrated with real photos that will capture their imaginations. Your students will develop fluency, vocabulary and phonological awareness as they listen and read. You can make the poem available in learning centers, project it on the whiteboard for whole-class instruction or assign it for children to practice reading at home. I wrote this poem for my students, who are learning English as a foreign language in elementary school. I wanted some ebooks that I could send my students to practice reading at home. I found ebooks to buy for classroom, but none that I could send to families. So I wrote some!
