The purpose of this series is to provide children who stutter with tools to help them be effective and confident communicators. The series also helps children develop awareness about their stuttering in an engaging and motivating way. Children who stutter will learn about stuttering and help Sal Salamander (a superhero who stutters) capture Critters in Fluency Springs. Each Critter gives Sal Salamander a special communication ”power”. This first part of the Sal Salamander Stuttering Series addresses the area of stuttering therapy called desensitization. The series promotes a positive attitude toward and awareness of stuttering using “The Fearless” Critter Powers (additionally, each character name is either a syllable or whole word repetition which helps decrease fear and avoidance of stuttering).
