Description: This file includes a PDF of the word problem that could be discussed to charge students' brains to execute the problem. It also includes an answer key for each problem, and there are the pages for students to create a model and explain their thinking. My students enjoy it because they can be creative in their own way of representing the problem, and they can see different ways to solve a problem. They also enjoy it because I also do one, and they like to see how I solve it. Suggestions: **Do it as a whole group for the first 5 problems. Turn it into a math talk. Then release the responsibility to students. It's a process. **Once students have created their model and written their explanation have 3-4 students share their model and thinking process (if you can project it on the board). The others learn from each other. I give a little gummy treat for the sharer's participation. **When they all have shared, I share mine and make a verbal note of how another student's model was similar to mine. **If a students shows advanced thinking, I give a class buck or a treat from my treasure box.
