Description: In this activity, students will show their learning about Groundhog Day and how it is used to predict the weather. Students will look at the groundhogs shown on the first page and put a check mark in the box of the groundhog that best matches the weather in their area. If the day is sunny, the groundhog predicts six more weeks of winter. If the day is cloudy, the groundhog predicts an early spring. After choosing the groundhog, students will write or draw and label to explain their reason. They should describe the weather outside and explain why they think the groundhog would predict either six more weeks of winter or an early spring. On the second page, students will draw and label or write three things they learned about Groundhog Day. These can include facts and opinions about the groundhog, the meaning of its shadow, if they think the groundhog is a good way to predict the weather, or when Groundhog Day is celebrated. This page encourages creativity while helping students show what they have learned. This activity helps students practice observing weather, making predictions, and sharing information through writing and drawing. Two page full color pdfs and 2 black and white pdfs.
