Description: This art gallery themed math project focuses on real-life applications of sales tax, tips, discounts and markups. 6th and 7th Grade students use their knowledge of percentages to complete calculations and develop essential skills, including rounding answers to the nearest cent. Worksheets are available in both no-prep black and white and color formats. Teachers can use individual worksheets as independent activities or complete the full project sequence. Ideal for 7th Grade and aligned with a proportion of 7.RP.A.3. It can also support 6th Grade students who are developing percentage and proportional reasoning skills. PROJECT OUTLINE Students become the newly appointed Director of The Painted Palette Art Gallery. An introduction sheet sets the scenario and includes a checklist of the 5 tasks. ★ Task 1: Students select 6 artworks for a new artist launch and apply markups to create new sales prices. ★ Task 2: Students help customers choose the least expensive artwork option by calculating discounts, sales tax and final costs. ★ Task 3: Students solve word problems involving the gallery’s Collector’s Club, calculating discounts and final prices for Gold, Silver and Bronze members. ★ Task 4: Students complete a sales report by calculating discounts, subtotals, tips, taxes and final prices. ★ Task 5: Students calculate purchases from the art supplies store, including 8% sales tax, then cut and paste the correct answers.
