Description: Are your students scared of word problems? Can you blame them? Word problems were many students’ Achilles Heels. This product is a fun way to connect students’ creativity in a mathematics model and writing to allow students to explain their thinking with words. In this Word Problem of the Day, you and the students have to trust the process. Eventually, students get used to the process of decoding word problems and also improve their understanding of math. What's more, students learn from their friends. They learn that they can get the same answer but in a different way. I’ve started this in my class and students ask to do the word problem of the day. Suggestions: **Do it as a whole group for the first 5 problems. Turn it into a math talk. Then, release the responsibility to students. It's a process. **Once students have created their model and written their explanation have 3-4 students share their model and thinking process (if you can project it on your Smartboard). The students not sharing can learn from each other. I give a little gummy treat for the sharer's participation. **When they all have shared, I share mine and make a verbal note of how another student's model was similar to mine or similar to another student's. **If a student shows advanced thinking, I give a class buck or a treat from my treasure box.
