It is impossible to teach students all of the words that they will encounter in their textbooks and classroom materials. Instead, we need to arm our students with strategies that will help them to understand new and unfamiliar words. One way of expanding academic vocabulary is by the use of context clues. Oftentimes, academic vocabulary is only seen in classroom materials. Our students have not been exposed to these words before. These context clues show students some strategies for understanding context clues. Each card shows different clues that may be found in sentences. Students are then given a Tier II words and asked to use the context to select the correct definition of a word from a choice of 4.
