Description: Phonological awareness has been well established as a reliable predictor in the ability to successfully learn to read. Word Manipulation, the ability to easily modify and move sounds or syllables in a word, is an essential component of phonological awareness for both reading and spelling. Manipulating words contributes to an understanding of how sounds and syllables work together within words, the learning of spelling patterns and an awareness or familiarity of words in general. Change the Vowels – Delete – Add - Substitute is designed to increase flexibility and awareness of vowels in words. Students read each word then follow the directions to delete, add and substitute vowels in each word to form new words. Students write then read the new words. Answers are located next to each word set.
