Description
This 27-card scavenger hunt can be used to teach students some of the interesting and famous individuals who participated in the California Gold Rush. In this hunt, students will learn about the famous bandit Black Bart, what Levi Strauss did during the Gold Rush that helped him start his denim empire, how the Gold Rush helped Mark Twain become a famous writer, why both James Marshall and John Sutter died bitter men, and more. To complete the hunt, students answer 13 multiple-choice questions. First, they read a question and its possible answers. Then they read the information that will help them answer it. If they choose the correct answer, they are directed to the next question. If their answer is incorrect, they can reread the text to find the correct answer. The final card in the deck challenges students to write 3 interesting things they learned about the people of the Gold Rush. The hunt can be used to supplement a study of Western Expansion or the California Gold Rush, to practice reading informational text, for history or reading centers, to provide background information for a story, or as an easy activity for a sub.
