Description: These 32 task cards provide practice in multiplying multi-digit numbers using the area model for partial products, also known as the box method. Students are asked to analyze for errors, provided missing information and solve a variety of multi-digit multiplication problems using the area model and partial products. Having observed frequent student misconceptions, such as trying to multiply the digits of the multiplier by other digits of the multiplier or multiplicand digits by multiplicand digits, this type of error is addressed in some of the analysis. The first two cards are included as a review of the strategy. 4.OA.2, 4.NBT.B5, 5.NBT.B5 Please note that these cards are not designed as an introduction but rather as an additional method to practice this strategy. Students should already be familiar with using the area model. They also need to remember to record the multiplicand first (along the side of the box) and the multiplier across the top. They will also need to have pencil and paper for solving partial products and solutions. These digital task cards would be great on a laptop, desktop, Chromebook, tablet, or any other mobile device that can access the internet. They can even be used on your SmartBoard.
