Description: These 21 cards help students learn vocabulary words about Martin Luther King Day. Students read a definition and then click on or type the word that matches the definition. The first card in the deck states the instructions and also includes a word bank with all 20 words. Students read the text and they can also click on the audio symbol to hear the directions and words in the word bank, plus all the definitions, read aloud. The cards have 4 types of multiple choice and fill in the blank responses, with 5 cards in each set: a) Cards 2 - 6: Multiple choice with 4 possible answers b) Cards 7 - 11: Multiple choice with 2 possible answers c) Cards 12 - 16: Fill in the blank with the correct word; these cards provide a picture as a clue d) Cards 17 - 21: Multiple choice with 3 possible answers This resource is aimed at English Language Learners with an intermediate level of language proficiency and higher. Other students may also find it helpful. Students will benefit much more from this resource if they already know or learn some background information about Dr. King first. After using this deck, as an extension activity, you can have your students can write a paragraph or composition using several of these vocabulary words, if you wish. You may want to tell your students that the word “march” has 2 meanings — the other definition is the name of the 3rd month but when used that way, the word is always capitalized.
