Summary and Main Idea Activity! Your upper-level students will learn how to extrapolate relevant details from short passages to develop a summary. Then, they are guided to generate a main idea. The passages are leveled according to the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level Analyzer, which are between 9.6 - 12.4 grade levels. There are 10 social studies and science-based nonfiction passages, 69-82 words each. Activities begin with more support and gradually increase independence. Though this resource is developed for older students with language delays/disorders, it can be practical for general English language arts instruction. Students will be led through the following activities: - 3 instructional cards (explanation of summarization and main idea, objective) - 10 science/social studies-based passages - identification of topics - extrapolation of relevant details for the passage's intent - sorting through how relevant details answer questions - organizing relevant details of each passage for a summary - selecting topic and primary concept for development of main ideas *Audio of passages and instruction is provided for limited readers. *Responses are in the form of click buttons, multiple choice, drag/drop, typed answers, and recorded answers.
