Subjects: math

Grades: 2,3,4,5,6

Description: Students will practice finding the surface area of L-shaped figures by using multiplication and addition, in this scaffolded activity. Each card features an L-shaped figure with all side lengths labeled in inches. Students will: 1. Drag and drop two transparent rectangles to the figure to decompose it. 2. Find the area of each rectangle using multiplication within 100 (typed response). 3. Add the two areas together to find the total area of the figure (typed response). Units of Measurement include: inches/ square inches Scaffolds: -The three steps are outlined on EACH slide to chunk the activity. -Draggable, transparent rectangle-manipulatives sized to the figure available on EACH slide (enables visualization of decomposing). -Students type the area of each rectangle AND the figure (if the student makes a mistake, they will be shown at which step the error occurred). 3.MD.7 Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition. d. Recognize area as additive. Find the area of figures composed of rectangles by decomposing into non-overlapping rectangles and adding the areas of the non-overlapping parts, applying this technique to solve real-world problems.
