Description: Semantically Speaking: Understanding Paragraphs is an ocean theme based reading and listening comprehension activity designed to improve language comprehension within the context of short paragraphs. The primary focus is to increase: metacognitive ability to flexibly interpret word meanings; efficiently recognize and form word associations; and, more effectively use words for verbal communication. Vocabulary skills addressed include synonyms, homonyms, antonyms, multiple meanings and word definitions within context. Students read aloud or listen to short paragraphs containing information about ocean life then answer questions related to the reading.
