Safe or unsafe choices in the playground Adaptive Social Story Book I created I Can Make SAFE Choices on the Playground to help children explore an important idea: the choices we make can affect our safety and the safety of the people around us. Children may climb, throw, run, touch, bite, or interact with materials for many different reasons. Rather than simply telling children “don’t do that,” this book helps them explore which choices are safe and which choices may be unsafe in different classroom situations. It also provides opportunities to talk about what they can do instead when a choice is not safe. This resource was created with a neuro-affirming, strengths-based approach. The goal is not to label children or their actions as “good” or “bad,” but to help them understand safety, recognize different situations, communicate their needs, and develop strategies for making safer choices. Use the pictures, symbols, AAC supports, and sorting activities to encourage conversation and shared problem-solving. Safety is a skill we teach—not a behavior we demand. The goal is to give children the language and tools they need to understand safety, advocate for themselves, and navigate playground situations with support.
