Description: Young learners start reading CVC words by identifying and reading the letter sounds that start the words. Segmenting involves reading each letter sound separately, while blending is the process by which the letter sounds are combined to say the word. In this activity students identify the first letter sound in the words shown in the pictures, then drag and drop to complete the word. This activity helps students to identify graphemes with confidence. Use as part of a phonics reading lesson by asking students to say the letter sound options. Then ask volunteers to drag the letter sounds into the boxes. For revision, play a game by dividing the class into teams. Each team takes a turn to make a word. If they don't get it right, the other team has the chance to complete the word correctly before taking their usual turn. Once the game is over, ask students to write as many words as they can remember (this could also be played as a team game). To revise the simple decodable words, set the activity for homework. The 40 CVC words are: bag, bat (2), bed, box, bug, bun, bus, cat, cap, cup, dad, dog, dot, fin, fox, hat, hen, jam, jet, jug, leg, lid, log, map, mat, mug, nap, net, pan, peg, pen, pig, pin, pot, red, six, sun, ten and top.
