Many students in Life Skills programs who are entering employment have little understanding of Health Insurance Benefits, Workplace Benefits, or why money is deducted from a paycheck. This resource introduces these important Job Readiness and Employment Skills concepts using simple language designed specifically for Special Education, Transition Programs targeting Job Readiness. I created this lesson because many resources covering Benefits are often too detailed and overwhelming for students with developing language and academic skills. Many learners simply need a clear introduction to understanding health insurance, workplace benefits, and paycheck deductions. Designed specifically for older students functioning at approximately a 4th Grade Reading Level with basic math skills, this lesson provides an accessible introduction to Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance. Students learn how health insurance can reduce the cost of Doctor Visits, Prescription Medications, and other medical expenses while understanding Paycheck Deductions and Payroll Deductions. This lesson is intentionally introductory. It focuses on practical information without overwhelming and complicated terminology. Included are 24 cards, (13 multiple choice / 12 open ended prompts) This resource focuses exclusively on Health Insurance Through Employment and emphasizes the importance of obtaining Workplace Health Benefits through a job. It does not discuss Private Health Insurance Plans.
