Description: This is a listening activity designed to help children discriminate between words that have initial consonant sounds and words that do not (auditory discrimination) using the minimal pairs approach. This deck contains 36 different word pairs and includes /p, b, m, h, w, t, d, k, g, n, f, l, s/ in the initial word position. First, name each picture in the pair for your child (i.e., "This is up. The arrow is pointing up. This is a cup. We drink from a cup"). Then, have them listen as you read the sentence on each card. Have your child identify the correct word. Emphasize the initial consonant sound in words as an additional cue (i.e., exaggerate the /k/ in "cup").
