Set 2 of the verbal inference and reasoning skills using short spoken or written scenarios, without picture support, to increase cognitive and language demand. Learners listen to or read a short story and answer a “How do you know?” question by identifying relevant evidence from the information given. The task supports progression into Blank Level 4 reasoning, where answers require justification rather than simple retrieval. This resource supports learners to: • identify relevant clues from spoken or written information • answer “how do you know?” questions using evidence • develop verbal reasoning and inference skills • prioritise relevant information over distractors • prepare for higher-level comprehension demands (e.g. LFBE) What’s included: • 16 interactive Boom Cards • short, image-free inference scenarios • multiple plausible clues to encourage explanation and reasoning • opportunities to accept more than one correct answer, depending on justification Suitable for: • speech and language therapy • neurodivergent learners • children with DLD / SLCN • learners working at Blank Level 3–4 • LFBE and secondary transition preparation • 1:1 or small group intervention This deck can be used: • with adult support and discussion • for guided verbal reasoning practice • as an assessment tool to identify inference strengths and gaps Clinicians can scaffold responses using prompts such as: “How does that clue help you know?” or “Which clue is the best?”
