Description

Help students strengthen their text evidence and reading comprehension skills with this engaging Evidence Showdown activity for Grades 4–5. Each card includes a short passage, a claim, and two students who choose different pieces of evidence from the text. Students must decide which student selected the stronger evidence and determine which detail best supports the claim. Unlike basic “find the evidence” activities, these questions encourage students to compare relevant details, evaluate the strength of evidence, make inferences, and distinguish between supporting information and the strongest text evidence. In many cards, both students choose reasonable details, so students must think carefully about which piece of evidence most directly supports the claim. The deck includes 25 passages with a variety of realistic fiction, informational text, science, school, community, and everyday-life contexts. It is ideal for reading centers, independent practice, test preparation, intervention, homework, or whole-class review. Skills practiced include: 1. citing evidence from a text 2. evaluating supporting evidence 3. identifying strong and weak evidence 4. supporting claims with text details 5. making text-based inferences 6. comparing relevant details 7. reading comprehension 8. close reading 9. reasoning from evidence This activity is designed for 4th and 5th grade ELA and works well for students practicing evidence-based reading responses and deeper comprehension.
