Description

There are 6 animal stories targeting lip rounding - the /u/ (lax) and /o/ (tense) horizontal plane back vowel sounds. There are many opportunities to repetitively model broad lip rounding (lip protrusion) using mainly CV, VC and CVC words. Initially provide tactile, visual & verbal prompts. Use 1 to 3-word phrases. Print out all the pictures and make a book or share remotely. 1. 21 pages of /u/ and /o/ practice (word list included- over 30 words) Put band aids on the boo boo’s of 6 animals - each animal does something silly! Moo Moo, Hoot, Pooch, Moose Goat, Hippo 2. Match the band aid to the animal 3. Move the boo boo to another body part - e.g. boo boo on tail, goat nose 4. Who lives there? The PROMPT Method has provided students (especially Childhood Apraxia of Speech and oral-facial weakness) with the necessary tactile feedback for producing /u/ and /o/ (Stage IV). I have successfully used both the surface & parameter PROMPTS for these vowels. I love using the PROMPT app on my phone to double check positioning and sequence. When do I work on lip protrusion? Lip rounding requires labial-facial control. My students who don’t have the control of lip round can usually produce vertical vowels e.g. uh, /a/ or /ae/ for /u/ and /o/. The ability to produce vowels vertically (degrees of opening and closing the mouth) requires mandibular control (Stage III.) I
