Description: Using words that look alike forces students to carefully attend to each sound in a word when decoding rather than guessing or rushing through. Building these strong phonemic awareness skills at the word level sets the foundation for fluent reading within text. This deck contains 48 cards depicting CVC short vowel words. Each picture has three words beneath it. Words differ by the VOWEL sound. Students must carefully read each word and decide which matches the picture (which short vowel sound is correct). This activity aligns to the Science of Reading research and is a perfect complement to any Orton-Gillingham lesson. The words in this deck are balanced for the five short vowels (9/10 correct answers per short a, i, o, u, and e).
