Categorisation will help your child develop their vocabulary. Talking about what items go together will assist in developing good storage of vocabulary. Good storage of vocabulary is important for retrieving and developing a large complex vocabulary. Associations are one of the first activities to encourage good vocabulary storage, followed by categorisation. Categorsiation will also help to develop “why” questions. Further it will also strengthen your child vocabulary through the development of category names – such as occupations, places, tools, clothes, etc.
