Description: Auditory Word Association is a skill which is acquired between 3 and 4 years old. It can target both receptive and expressive language. Students build a foundation of basic semantic knowledge and learn the relationships of similar and different items. It is the precursor to learning to identify and name categories, give descriptions and make comparisons. Learning How and Why word associations is a more abstract skill which requires the student to think and explain the relationship between the 2 or more pictures. Identify the picture connection - start with a field of 3, e.g. show student picture of cereal and say, cereal goes with a spoon. After student chooses picture, model You eat cereal with a spoon. Then ask student, What do you eat cereal with? Show student spoon. Teach the skill first! How you ask the question may impact how your student responds.
