Description: Phonemic Awareness – Segmenting This fun and engaging deck of 25 cards will reinforce phonemic awareness skills in students as they work independently to identify and order the beginning, middle and ending sound in a CVC word. Each card includes a picture, three dots with audio of a phoneme, and a set of three Elkonin Boxes. Students are required to listen to the picture and phonemes and drag the dots to their correct position on the Elkonin Boxes. Audio is provided for all items and the first card provides audio directions. Immediate feedback is provided and students will be automatically directed to the next card once the correct answer has been chosen. Phonemic awareness, or the ability to manipulate individual sounds or phonemes within words, is a critical skill for children to learn prior to decoding and spelling. Being able to successfully identify, substitute, and delete phonemes in words is a predictor of future reading success. Because phonemic awareness involves the sounds or phonemes in words, it does not include or require knowledge of alphabetic characters.
