Based on Scholastic's Rooke Read-About President's Day book, this Developing Language Comprehension Deck assesses students' comprehension of basic facts about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and President's Day. In light of the current political climate, I do want to make you aware that there is one question about whether slavery was one of the reasons for the Civil War. (It is in the book, after all.) In an effort to be more inclusive of girls and people of color, I also have added questions about who the current president and vice president of the United States are (no politics involved.) Other presidents included in this deck are: John Adams (1st VP & 2nd POTUS & staunch abolitionist; his wife Abigail Adams argued that women should have the right to vote at the country's founding); Harry Truman (Franklin Roosevelt's VP & the person who desegrated the armed forces); John Kennedy (youngest person elected POTUS; 35th President who challenged us to go to the moon); Lyndon Johnson (John Kennedy's Texan VP who became president following Kennedy's assassination & who signed Medicare/Medicaid & the Voting Rights Act into law); and Barack Obama (the 1st person of color to hold the office; 2nd youngest POTUS after John Kennedy).
