Description

Cat starts with a g? Gato es con c. Why is the apple with the m? Manzana es con a! Have your students made comments like this? Do you teach in a Spanish immersion setting? When working with commercial word sorts in Spanish, my students would get stuck on the vocabulary, and we would spend more time reviewing vocabulary in the target language and less time actually doing independent sorting. Its hard to sort words by their initial sound if you see a gato in a letter g sort and your students knows that it starts with a c! So much confusion! These task cards all use images that are Spanish-English cognates (full cognates or at least the initial letter) so the skill practice isn't encumbered by students limited vocabulary. All your students in a two-way immersion can use their vocabulary (linguistic repertoire) to identify initial consonants. With over 50 cards to play through, students will either identify the initial consonant to match an image or pick two images that begin with the indicated consonant.
