Practice identifying genres with this set of Genre Task Cards. This set includes 24 task cards designed to help students identify and distinguish between a variety of fiction and nonfiction genres. Students will read short passages and answer multiple-choice questions about genre. Questions ask students to identify the genre, determine which text features support the genre, explain why a passage fits a specific genre, and recognize characteristics commonly found in different types of texts. Genres included are realistic fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, science fiction, humor, mystery, poetry, folklore, informational text, biography, autobiography, and functional text. The majority of cards focus on literary fiction. These task cards provide engaging reading comprehension practice while helping students learn how authors organize and present different types of texts. Students will build confidence identifying genre characteristics and using text evidence to support their thinking.
