Description: Turn repetition practice into a mini art lesson with these 10 interactive puzzle activities, focusing on R sounds (initial /r/, medial /r/, “ar”, "er", “or”, “air”, “ear”, “ire”, /rl/, /r/ blends). Students will say their target word & click 5x per puzzle piece to gradually reveal a famous masterpiece. With 20 words/pieces per puzzle, students will practice 100 total repetitions of the target sound – the recommended number of repetitions per session that research on motor speech learning shows is key for building lasting articulation change. As the words and puzzle pieces fade with each click, students will be motivated to keep going (“I wonder what’s behind this piece?”) while getting the drill practice needed to establish new speech sound patterns. By completing the puzzles, students will walk away with improved sounds and a new appreciation for art. The slow-reveal effect is also a natural springboard for language goals. Easily incorporate language targets into articulation sessions by using the partially uncovered image to prompt predicting what the picture might be, inferencing based on visual clues, and asking “wh” questions (“What do you see?” “Where do you think this is?” “Who might be in this painting?”). New vocabulary naturally comes up as students learn about the artwork and may want to do further research to find fun facts.
