About me: Mrs M the OT. I have worked in various fields of OT but in the last 6 years I have focused on 3-12 year olds. Over the last year I have used these boom cards during my occupational therapy sessions. These cards work on many different skills, visual perceptual, memory, letter placement, uppercase vs lowercase letters, scanning and ABC formation and order. I intentionally do not put cards in ABC order as I have found children know how to sing and say the ABC's but they often don't know their letters. Sometimes LMNOP is one letter or Y and Z is another letter. Even though most children I work with learn by repetition, in a real life situation they need to be able to generalize these skills. Life is not static and learning and experiences are every changing. Although this is hard for the children I work with I have found that after continued practice they learn to generalize these skills over many activities. These boom cards last over several OT sessions and are often paired with various fine and gross motor activities as well as working with dry erase boards, chalk or crayon and typing skills. These boom cards have become a fun interaction between child and adult. I have found that working on vertical and horizonal letters as soon as a child learns the horizontal and vertical writing strokes helps to put the connection of writing to letters to words both written and spoken. Sometimes this enables a non-verbal child to express themselves more quickly.
