Description: Increase students' vocabulary skills through category word webs that teach both convergent and divergent naming skills. Understanding of how words relate to one another facilitates the learning of new vocab as students make connections to words they already know. Identifying these relationships can also aide in efficient word finding skills as students sort through their mental "file system" to retrieve the word they're looking for. This deck includes 30 different word webs (see the preview for an example!). Each word web gives 3 different objects and then provides space in the center of the web to name the common category (convergent naming). Next, students will think of 3 more words that would belong in the same category and write them in additional branches of the web (divergent naming). 30 word webs included in increasing level of difficulty. The deck starts with more basic categories (eg. food, colors) and progresses to more advanced category groups (eg. landforms, planets). Note: This is not a self-checking deck, but rather it is intended to be used as a teaching & learning tool with the support of SLP/educator completing the cards along with the students. A suggested response is provided for the category name in a hidden tab that can be moved into the screen. Responses for additional category members are not included as the possibilities are almost endless! Encourage students to share their reasoning as you discuss other words that could be added to each word web.
