Description: In this scaffolded deck, students will practice subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. - They will see a subtraction problem. - First, students will create equivalent fractions (with the same denominator) by multiplying the original denominators together (Note, in some cases, there is a lower common multiple, but for consistency, students will always multiply the denominators in this deck). - Next, students will subtract the new fractions. -Finally, students will simplify if needed and/ or click "Submit" Scaffolds: - Students will be guided through the process with a template. - One denominator will be filled in for the equivalent fractions. - If the fraction needs to be simplified, that step will be included in the template (if not, that part of the template will not be present) Only proper fractions are included (no improper fractions or mixed numbers). 5.NF.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers and fractions greater than 1) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators.
