Description: Use this book to pre-teach children what to do around water. Clear and simple illustrations help students focus on the main point. The story will be automatically read to the student. Repetitive text helps students remember what to do. After the story there are 5 comprehension questions to check the students’ understanding. From the Note to Parents and Teachers: Water safety is very important for children to learn. Especially of concern are children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The National Autism Association reports this startling statistic: “In 2009, 2010, and 2011, accidental drowning accounted for 91% total U.S. deaths reported in children with an ASD ages 14 and younger subsequent to wandering/elopement.” [Autism & Safety Facts. National Autism Association. Web. 9 May 2016. . ] Children do not have the ability to distinguish between the danger of a large amount of water and a small amount of water, so they should learn this rule for any setting with water: “Stop. Ask an adult if I can play.” I have intentionally chosen a variety of water activities, from the relative safety of a sprinkler, to the more obvious danger of the pool. This is to help children generalize that in any setting with water, they need to ask permission. Children also need to learn that when they ask about playing in water, they may get the answer, “no,” and that’s OK. This book addresses that possibility too. By pre-teaching this skill, you can help your child be safe and have fun!
