Your adult ESL students who struggle with the short vowels will love this challenge because they can work on improving their ability to distinguish these sounds at their own pace and in the privacy of their own homes. This deck will give them lots of practice in distinguishing between those tricky short vowel sounds. I created this deck of short vowel phonemes with adult students in mind and with specific former students of mine clearly pictured in my head. This is a deck I wish I'd had to use with these students! Each card has a list of FIVE words that are all minimal pairs with each other, one for each of our short vowel sounds. In IPA, these sounds are represented by /æ/, /ɛ/, /ɪ/, /ɑ/, and /ʌ/. Students will hear a word and then select the word they heard from the list of five words. Audio is set to play automatically, and students may click on the icon to listen again as many times as they want. Please be sure to check out all my other pronunciation-related decks.
