Description: These Area Model Task Cards for Division were designed to scaffold students’ learning and understanding of using the area model for dividing whole numbers. This Boom Deck contains 20 problems for dividing numbers in the thousands place by a 2 digit divisor. While teaching the area model method to divide 3 digit and 4 digit dividends, I noticed commonalities among my students who struggled with dividing whole numbers with this method: 1) Students have a hard time deciding which initial number to subtract from the dividend; 2) Students struggle to understand what number needs to be placed above the rectangle/box (the other factor or the partial quotient) To help students better understand the area model, I designed these Area Model task cards where I have done the first step by giving students a multiple that can be subtracted from the dividend. Since I want students to see that they can really start from any entry point that makes sense, the first step does not always use the largest initial number that is possible. To provide further scaffolding, I created cards with and without the first partial quotient given to give students another level of challenge or support. THESE CARDS GIVE THE FIRST PARTIAL QUOTIENT. THEY ARE IDENTICAL TO THE DIVIDING THOUSANDS BY 2 DIGIT DIVISOR PROBLEMS EXCEPT THAT THE FIRST PARTIAL QUOTIENT IS PROVIDED. (These two sets are also offered as a bundle for 150 less points and can be offered in different mixes by request!)
