Words with TH Sound

Description: Get students to listen for the th sound in words. This is a phonemic awareness activity so there are no letters to look at. (I did sneak in the th grapheme so we can start to make that transition to letters!) Start teaching the th sound by listening for it in words! This can be one of many th sound activities for students to practice. I have included both the voiced and unvoiced sounds of th in this resource. I start with articulation directions, audio directions of how to play, and an example. I’m always thinking about pre-teaching or reteaching of the th sound skill. Students will see a picture and hear me saying the name for each picture. There are 53 cards so multiple practices will be fun and engaging. The difficulty of each card varies. Some of the non-examples include other digraph sounds. You can easily hide those cards if they are too difficult for your students. According to the research on reading, students need to hear the individual sounds in words before looking for these in print.
