This activity is based on the decodable book, HANK THE TANK: ANIMAL IN THE SPOTLIGHT from the HOT ROD series available at www.wordtravelpress.com or amazon.com, but the book is not needed to use this deck. Students learn the difference between a DEPENDENT CLAUSE and an INDEPENDENT CLAUSE, and then use material related to the story to practice telling the difference. NOTE: The clauses and phrases used as examples are decodable in alignment with Level 2 of the HOT ROD series, where the focus is on short vowels, digraphs/trigraphs/combinations (wh, qu, ch, tch, th, ng, sh), and the nk blend.
