Subjects: speech

Grades: 14,13,1,2,3

Description: By around age 7, children should be able to correctly produce and discriminate between phonemes /s/ and /z/. Minimal pairs are defined as words that differ by only one phonemic element. This minimal pairs activity is a great interactive game for kids who are learning to hear the difference between /s/ and /z/ and practice correct production. If using this activity for articulation, at least 5 repetitions recommended per word! Feel free to use this activity in different ways, here are a couple of examples: -Prompt the child to show you one word such as "sip" and have the child gesture/select/move the correct object to the matching word to show understanding, followed by the next word "zip" and similar action without them having to say the word to demonstrate phoneme awareness. -Provide modeling for both sounds, having the child imitate both words back to back followed by identifying correct images -Model the whole activity for the child, dragging and dropping objects incorrect locations then have them copy your actions! -Demonstrate "absurdity" for the child by saying the word and selecting the incorrect objects, dragging and dropping objects in the incorrect locations, and then having the child identify the absurdity and fix it for you!
