Description: Our adult ESL students must first be able to discriminate specific sounds that they hear before they can produce them. This deck gives them that practice with the short e vs. short i sounds. /ɛ/ vs /ɪ/ Students will hear a word and then select the vowel sound they heard from a given pair of IPA symbols. It's best first to be sure your students know that /ɛ/ is the short e sound and /ɪ/ is the short i sound, but I did include audio of each sound in the bottom right-hand corner of each card. Students can click on the IPA symbol to hear its sound at any time. Please note that I have this same deck (#2) available in a more challenging version for students who are reading. They hear the same words in that deck but select the word they heard from a given pair of minimal pairs instead of the IPA symbol. The more challenging deck includes a multi-syllable word that I did not include in THIS deck out of concern that students might be confused by WHICH vowel sound they should focus on. Deck #2 doesn't include the IPA sound icons on each card. I made this deck with adult students in mind, so it is without clipart or decorative backgrounds. As such, this deck will not appeal to children. It is meant for high school age and older. I based this deck on a worksheet activity from my Short E vs. Short i Pronunciation resource (pdf) available in my TpT store.
