Description: Breaking down words by prefixes, suffixes and roots gives students a strategy to decode unknown words. This reading strategy transfers beyond the single word to other unfamiliar words that include those common affixes and roots. The intent of this deck is to practice decoding three syllable words that contain a prefix, root, and suffix. Explicit practice using this decoding strategy can be an effective way for student to approach new, unfamiliar words. Three activities to practice this decoding strategy are provided: 1) Students select from 2-3 options of different prefixes, roots/partial roots, and suffixes to create the provided word. 2) Students write the word, broken down by its prefix, root, and suffix. 3) This set ends with a game where students identify the word part (prefix, root, or suffix) in order to reveal a section of a picture.
