MAP SKILLS - Improve Spatial Awareness Reading Maps - Cardinal Directions Spatial Awareness is the ability to consciously relate to objects in our environment. It is an important skill for understanding the spatial concepts of location and the social concepts of personal space. It affects the ability to space letters and words when writing a sentence, to follow directions, and to order numbers in math. Map Skills is a fun and motivating way for students to practice reading a map and use a compass to identify the correct direction of one object in relation to another object. It targets the improvement of spatial relationships (right, left, beside, between...) and directional orientation terms (north, south, east, west). The activities provide practice in finding specific locations, reading addresses, visual scanning and following written directions.
