Description: Established beginner to intermediate French students can practice reading comprehension skills and vocabulary acquisition with this deck on the cultural event, le Carnaval de Nice. Students will read the correspondence between an American girl and a French girl. Through a series of written text, the French girl helps explain what le Carnaval de Nice is like. There are 4 different sections of their correspondence. After each section, there are various comprehension and vocabulary questions (vrai/faux, multiple choice, fill-in, corresponding images, etc.).There is a total of 13 questions. The entire deck is in the present tense. The level is established beginner to intermediate with many cognates (des musiciens, des costumes, des spectateurs) and words students would most likely be familiar with (les fleurs, février, ils portent). Potential new words that will be seen in the text include: un défilé, des chars, une tête, une marionnette, des gens, lancer, attraper. You know your students best: some will be able to deduce what they mean in context and others will need help up front. You could ask students to complete this individually for practice. Then, go back through the written text and discuss the answers as a whole class. Do you have suggestions for other reading/listening comprehension decks? Email us: frenchwiththehobbs@gmail.com
