Description: Word association skills help to extend word meaning, build strong semantic networks and activate word retrieval. Find the Mismatch! Why? Quiz Game targets understanding word relationships based on features, functions and semantic classes. The stronger the semantic network the more easily automatic associations are activated and accessed from memory. This game activity provides practice in linguistic flexibility by requiring the verbal reasoning skills needed to determine why one of the words within a set of six does not belong. Students read or listen to each set of six words, decide which of the words is a mismatch then explain why the word does not belong in the set. In order to determine which word does not belong in the set students must first understand the relationship connecting five of the words.
