Description: Embedded video lesson on first slide! Then students answer 20 questions. This lesson introduces aquaponics as a sustainable way of growing plants and fish together in a mini-ecosystem. The system works by utilizing fish waste as a natural fertilizer for the plants, and the plants filter and clean the water for the fish. LED lights are used to provide the proper wavelengths of light for photosynthesis. Aquaponics has many benefits, including all-natural fertilizer, no pesticides or herbicides, using less water than traditional farming, and growing up to eight times as much food in the same amount of space. However, setting up the system can be expensive and not all plants can be grown in it. Despite the downsides, aquaponics is an effective way to reduce environmental impact and provide fresh, pesticide-free produce.
