Phonological awareness has been well established as a reliable predictor in the ability to successfully learn to read. Segmentation is an essential component of phonological awareness for both reading and spelling. In order to read and write words the must be broken down into sounds and the corresponding letters they represent. Segmentation contributes to an understanding of how sounds work together within words, the learning of spelling patterns and an awareness or familiarity of words in general. Letters – Sounds _ Syllables is designed to increase the ability to identify the number of letters, the number of sounds heard, the letters representing the sounds and the number of syllables in words. Students complete each of the four tasks then go to the next page to check their answers.
