Description

Practice identifying stressed syllables in English phrases. Place the three stressed syllables under the boat, then say the phrase out loud. Rhythm is key: English is stress-timed, so each stressed syllable comes on a consistent beat. Unstressed syllables are quicker and quieter and fit between the beats. For example: "Birds eat worms" has three stressed syllables, or three beats. "The birds are eating some worms" has the same three stressed syllables/beats, so it takes about the same amount of time to say.
