Description: Follow 1-step directions at 4 key word level and help Henry Hippo pack for school in this Boom Cards™ game. This advanced level is suited to children who are learning to follow directions involving object names, colours, size words, and prepositions. What does “Key Word Level” mean? In North America (and many other countries), Speech Language Pathologists and Behavioural Interventionists commonly differentiate directions by the number of steps. However, “give me the cup” could be much easier than “give me the big red cup” even though both are 1-step directions. Therefore, key words, also known as information carrying words (ICW), are useful in differentiating difficulty in commands. ICW stands for Information Carrying Word. This concept originates from and is widely used in the UK. ICWs are key words that must be understood in order to follow a direction. Imagine holding a car out to a child, and you say, “Take the car.” He/she does not have to understand any of those words because it is obvious what he/she needs to do. However, if you are holding out a car and a teddy bear and you say, “Take the car.” Then, the child needs to understand what “car” is and what “bear” is to know which to take. Therefore, there is one information carrying word (ICW) in that direction. Think of ICWs as “slots” in a sentence that carry key information.
